Blasting and surface preparation up to Sa 2½ in Hennigsdorf
Abrasive surface preparation of steel and aluminium components – stationary in our open blasting facility for component lengths up to 30 m, or mobile on the customer site.
PICTUM Oberflächentechnik GmbH blasts metal components at its site in Hennigsdorf near Berlin – as a standalone service or as surface preparation for subsequent powder coating or wet painting in-house.
The process
In sandblasting, abrasive is propelled onto the component surface at high velocity. This removes rust, mill scale, existing coatings and contamination and roughens the surface evenly. That roughness is the basis for the adhesion of every subsequent coating: a powder coating or wet paint finish is only as good as the substrate it sits on. In our open blasting facility, which is over 30 metres long, we also blast large components up to 30 m in one piece – at up to 6 m in width and 6 m in height, without cutting and without repositioning. We match the abrasive and the surface preparation grade – up to Sa 2½, or gentle sweep blasting on request – to the substrate and to the subsequent coating.
What does Sa 2½ mean?
The cleanliness grades to DIN EN ISO 8501-1 describe how thoroughly a steel surface has been cleaned by blasting: Sa 2 stands for thorough blast cleaning (firmly adhering residues permitted), Sa 2½ for very thorough blast cleaning – the surface is almost bare metal with only slight shading remaining. Sa 2½ is the grade most frequently specified in customer requirement documents for high-grade corrosion protection and is the standard prior to rail coating systems. Sweep blasting, by contrast, works at reduced intensity and only roughens the surface – ideal for making intact existing coatings or galvanised surfaces overcoatable without removing them. Commercial customers commission us to derust and descale steel components, to remove coatings from machine and plant parts, and to prepare rail vehicle components to the applicable standards. For private customers we blast gates, fences, wheel rims, furniture or spare parts. We also process more sensitive substrates such as aluminium – abrasive and blast pressure are matched to the material.

Benefits
Blasted surfaces are metallically clean and roughened to a defined profile – the prerequisite for durable corrosion protection. Compared with manual grinding or chemical pickling, blasting is faster and more uniform on most component geometries and reliably reaches edges, corners and profiles. Anyone who has parts blasted and coated directly with us also avoids the critical interval between surface preparation and coating, during which bare steel surfaces can start to rust again: at PICTUM the parts go straight from the blasting booth into coating without intermediate transport.

Our production runs from 06:00 to 23:45; we give you a binding completion date with the quotation. If you would like the parts coated afterwards, we quote blasting and coating directly as a package.
