A durable coating does not begin with the application of paint but with proper preparation of the substrate. PICTUM combines paint stripping, blasting, wet painting and powder coating into coordinated process chains – depending on substrate, initial condition, component geometry and later loading, including defined inspection and documentation requirements.

Industrial wet painting to customer specification
Single-coat and multi-coat coating systems for components, assemblies and complete vehicle fronts. Coating system, substrate preparation, specified coating thickness and colour shade are executed in accordance with the technical requirement – for components that cannot be transported, also with mobile equipment including an enclosure at the customer's site.

Depending on substrate, surface preparation, powder system and operating conditions, high mechanical resistance as well as durable weathering and corrosion protection can be achieved. For defined applications in the rail vehicle sector, PICTUM holds the DB coater qualification to DBS 918340.

Blasting and surface preparation up to Sa 2½
Abrasive removal of corrosion, mill scale, existing coatings and contamination to the required surface preparation grade. For sensitive or already coated surfaces, sweep blasting is available as an adapted process – stationary in the open blasting facility or mobile at the customer's site.

Substrate-specific paint stripping for components and production equipment
Existing paint and powder coatings are removed chemically or thermally, depending on base substrate, coating system, component geometry and subsequent processing – as a single order or as a recurring process for fixtures, beams, hangers and jigs.

Surface engineering with an industrial tradition in Hennigsdorf.
The Hennigsdorf site has been connected with rail vehicle manufacturing for more than a century – the painting of components and assemblies has a tradition here that goes back decades. Since the small-parts painting operation was spun off in 1999, the business has worked independently at the site, and since 2017 as PICTUM Oberflächentechnik GmbH. We carry this industrial process knowledge forward with modern equipment and process technology.

Full timeline 1910 – today
AEG buys the site – and first builds a paint factory
Emil Rathenau acquires around 5.6 square kilometres in Hennigsdorf and Nieder-Neuendorf. Besides the porcelain factory, the first plants include an oilcloth and paint factory. Surface engineering at the site is older than locomotive manufacturing.
Locomotive manufacturing begins
The foundation stone for the locomotive works is laid at the end of 1913, and the first standard-gauge electric locomotives are assembled in spring 1914. Hennigsdorf becomes a city of rail vehicle manufacturing.
200 km/h – the 05 002
The streamlined steam locomotive 05 002, built in Hennigsdorf, sets a world record. In the same years, the E 18 and E 19 express locomotives leave the works.
VEB Lokomotivbau-Elektrotechnische Werke
After destruction and dismantling, the works resumes operation as LEW. Over the following decades, the E 11, E 42, V 60, V 100 and 250 classes are built here – vehicles for the Deutsche Reichsbahn and for export.
Small-parts painting is established
As production restarts, the painting of small parts and assemblies becomes a fixed part of the works. This tradition has continued without interruption to this day.
AEG, Adtranz and the last locomotive
In 1992 AEG takes back its former works; in 1996 rail vehicle manufacturing is absorbed into Adtranz. On 24 May 1998, 145 010 – the last electric locomotive built in Hennigsdorf – leaves the works. The site realigns towards multiple units.
Out of the works and into independence
Adtranz spins off the small-parts painting division. Loll Entlackungs- und Pulverbeschichtungs-GmbH uses it to establish the Kleinteillackierung Hennigsdorf operation. Buildings, structures and equipment are transferred for use – and the existing workforce is taken on. The know-how therefore stays in-house while the process technology is comprehensively modernised.
Bombardier takes over the site
Adtranz becomes Bombardier Transportation. Underground trains for the BVG follow, along with class 422 and 430 suburban trains, trams for Berlin, the Talent 2 from 2008 and the ICE 4 cooperation with Siemens from 2010.
PICTUM Oberflächentechnik GmbH
Since 2017 the Hennigsdorf business has traded as PICTUM Oberflächentechnik GmbH – in the same place, in Gebäude 100 on the factory site. Wet painting, powder coating, blasting and paint stripping come together under one roof.
Alstom
The site passes to Alstom and is set up as a development and service location. Maintenance and modernisation move into the foreground – tasks in which the surface is decisive.
Four processes, one site, verified quality
We work to ISO 9001:2015 and with the DB coater qualification to DBS 918340 – for rail vehicles, industry, commercial and private customers. Production from 06:00 to 23:45, documented from delivery to final inspection.
Equipment, coating systems and quality requirements have changed over the decades. What has remained is the process knowledge from decades of industrial surface treatment – from proper surface preparation to documented final inspection. What counts is the interaction of substrate, preparation, coating system, application and inspection.
